Tung Fort (Kathingad), Lonavala

Dynasty of Adil Shahi build Tung Fort before 1600 CE. Later Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj seized it. In this smallest maharashtra fort only 200 soldiers were can stay at a time. Because of this it was impossible for any king to defend this fort for a long time. The primary responsibility of this fort was to guard the road to Pune from the Maval region of the Pawana and Mulshi valleys. Tung Fort's security was entrusted to the Dhamale family, one of the Deshmukh from the Maval district.

Also the responsbility of fort was to temporarily distract the invaders who try to attack on Visapur and Lohagad fort. So that soldiers on those fort will get some time for war preparation.

Tung fort is located near Lonavala city which is placed 65km from Pune and 88km from Mumbai. You travel with railway upto Lonavala railway station which is 47km from fort.

Easy. But trekkers need to take precautions because of shape of fort. Trekkers can start trekking from Tungwadi village

The greatest time to visit this magnificent location is right after the rainy season, between September and January

1. Temples- You can see Ganapati, Hanuman and Bhairavnath temples near/on this fort
2. Camping at Pawna Lake- Tung is located much closer to Pawna Lake. You can do camping at Pawna Lake during your visit. Number of camping options available near this lake.
3. Sunset- After you visit to Tung, you can enjoy sunset from beautiful Pawna Lake
